According to resources, Whitney Houston plans to make a comeback in “Sparkle”, Sony Pictures, after being seen in 1996’s “The Preacher’s Wife” last time in a movie. “Sparkle” is going to be a re-make of a 1976 drama. Jordin Sparks (American Idol winner) and Mike Epps, an actor, are also likely to be casted in Sparkle. Its script has been written by Mara Brock Akil, the maker of “The Game”. Salim Akil, her husband, is the director of this remake and Derba Martin Chase is going to be the producer.
The old Sparkle’s story revolved around three William sisters who started their singing career by joining the church choir in Harlem, but eventually turned into a popular girl band. Their consequent popularity, then, shows the world their personal lives a little as well. The lead character will be played by Sparks whereas Houston will be acting as her unsupportive mother. Epps, on the other hand, will play a stand-up comedian role and villainous character.
In the original drama, Irene Cara played Sparkle whereas Mary Alice performed the role of Effie. The Villainous role was played by Tony King. Whitney Houston started her career with “The Bodyguard” in 1992. She also played roles in “Waiting to Exhale”, aside from “Preacher’s Wife”. She made her last appearance on a TV movie, “Cinderella”, in 1997, which she worked with Brandy Norwood.
Houston was working on the project, as a producer, years back, when it was being set up at Warners. But she will be the executive producer for this latest movie. It will be the first movie appearance of Saprks, the winner of the Sixth season of American Idol. Epps; on the other side, will once again be getting a chance to work with Akils. He has special knack for comedy, but has done a variety of roles and has recently finished a psychological thriller “Vipaka”.
