The Best New Artist Award Goes to Tyler, The Creator

The Best New Artist Award Goes to Tyler, The Creator
05.09.11

Despite the crowd of female winners including Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Britney Spears at MTV’s Video Music Awards 2011, a lean and “foul-mouthed” rapper won the title of best new artist just at the age of 20, which is among the top awards of VMA. Tyler, The Creator, is leader of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All-a hip-hop collection of L.A. Tyler won the award for his “Yonkers”-a chilling clip.

Tyler was nominated along, Kreayshawn, Foster The People, Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean. After getting the award Tyler said, “Yo, I'm excited as fuck right now, yo. I wanted this shit since I was nine. I'm about to cry." In 2009, Lady Gaga won this award and last year Justin Bieber got it.

Tyler also shouted and cheered Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt through his acceptance speech and said, "To all the kids watching, you can do this shit." Tyler’s video, “Yonkers”, was also nominated for the video of the year, but he lost it to the video “Firework” by Katy Perry’s.

Moreover, Tyler also took a shot at Bruno Mars. Tyler responded before VMAs to the question that if Mars won the Best Video of the Year Award for his video “Grenade” what would be his reaction, with the words, “I might kill myself." But, later on he posted on Twitter, “Fuck I Hate Bruno But That Was Really Good."
