Patrick Watson Gets Surprise in 'Backyard' Album, Wacky Instruments
17.03.12

From the start of 2000, Canadian based band Patrick Watson has constructed a strong supporters’ platform via orchestral pop through amazing instruments, cinematic and memorable tunes. In their new album to be launched "Adventures In Your Own Backyard," on May 1 at Domino, the band is going to perform their original specialty, getting back to their root sound.

While talking to Billboard.com, frontman Patrick Watson says, "I think it's a lot straighter than it usually is, in terms of amassing a collection of instruments. What we tried to do is bare it down to the essentials for us."

Watson is famous for weird instruments such as in “Wooden Arms” they played a “bicycle" but on this occasion they used a bit lower tentative jingles. However, instruments still aren't precisely our public fare. According to Watson "[We used] a glass marimba" is one of those which are touching interesting sounds of the album. Watson says, "I think [it's] pretty [but] it kind of sounds like crystal meth!"

Although, Watson has a great significance in the band, it is still a complete group. Watson states, "It doesn't sound like a singer-songwriter thin. It has much more of a band chemistry."

The reality is that this band never planned to come this far: it took start by a multimedia project which marked a photography book; Watson's actual reception aided them to bring project to consistent standing. Briefing about band’s initial gig around 10 years ago Watson said, "We decided to rent out this old porno theater in Montreal. People were so curious to see what was inside… loads of people showed up! We ended up having our first show completely sold out, without anybody knowing what we do."

In the recent times, Watson’s supporters happened to find him through programs such as "Grey's Anatomy" and ads like Tropicana in their innate Canada. In spite of great celebrity gestures, Watson remains stranded in his slant.

Watson highlights, "[It's something] you hate and love at the same time. You hate doing it on some part because you don't want people [thinking] you just want to sell your music cheaply and just sit in the hot tub. But the flip side… it's a way to discover music. Maybe people who don't have as much access to new music or come from more of a TV culture get an opportunity for new and interesting music."

Patrick Watson got ideas for two imminent videos: one following latest single "Into Giants," and another new determined plan. For the album "Adventures In Your Backyard," Watson decides to travel and search locals, ask them some questions and find out their best recollections related to their own backyards. Watson acknowledges, "The one thing you do notice in travel is you meet amazing people, and that's probably the best part of traveling".
