Madonna’s “Masterpiece”, a ballad for her film “W.E”, was awarded the best song at the glamorous Golden Globe awards ceremony recently. Madonna has won the Golden Globe award for the second time; the first time was back in 1997 as best actress in a musical “Evita”. The gifted singer, in her characteristic British tone, thanked her manager, Guy Oseary, “for being so irritating” and Harvey Weinstein, her studio boss.
The sultry music artist gave the host of the show a run for his money as well. Madonna jabbed Ricky Gervais when he said she still looks “just like a virgin”. She swiftly responded to his remark with, “If I’m still just like a virgin, Ricky then why don't you come over here and do something about it. I haven't kissed a girl in a few years, at least not on TV."
‘Masterpiece’ is a ballad with a simple production which reminds one of her 1990s era. Being a ballad, the lyrics strike an emotional chord with listeners. James Harry helped Madonna co-write the piece.
The film casts James D’Arcy as King Edward VIII and Andrea Riseborough as his sweetheart Wallis Simpson. “W.E” is about a king who relinquishes his kingship only to marry his beloved. However, the song has not been nominated for best original song for the Oscars and the movie also does not seem to have made that big of an impact, since reviews are pretty sketchy.
Talking about the winner in the original score category; Ludovic Bource (“The Artist”) vanquished Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who were hoping to grab the award this year with their ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”
