Following in the footsteps of other popular celebrities like Jay-Z and Will Smith, Alicia Keys too jumped the bandwagon into the world of Broadway Producers. Keys, who is accredited with hit singles like ‘Fallin’ and ‘A Woman’s Worth’ will assist with the production of the play ‘Stick Fly’ by Lydia R. Diamond later this fall.
The play is a contemporary comedy of manners dealing with a well to do black family whose insecurities slowly surface while on a holiday trip to Martha’s Vineyard.
"I'm passionate about this play because it is so beautifully written and portrays black America in a way that we don't often get to see in entertainment," Keys said in a statement. "I know it will touch all audiences who will find a piece of themselves somewhere inside this house."
The play has previously been played in Boston, Chicago and Washington, D.C. The performance will commence at the Lyceum Theatre on the 45th Street on Nov. 18 and the play will be open for all officially on Dec. 8.
The manager of the play will be Kenny Leon whose previous Broadway production ‘Fences’ received 10 Tony Award Nominations. His other works are ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ and ‘Radio Golf’.
Diamond who is a playwriting professor at the Boston University has also personalized the work of Tony Morrison’s ‘The Bluest Eye’ for plays and has written ‘Stage Black’ and ‘The Gift Horse’.
Earlier in 2009 Jay-Z, Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith helped produce the musical ‘Fela!’, the show revolving around an Afrobeat superstar Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
