This Tejano singer is the first Latina singer that succeeded to be an American pop icon, both in music and film industry. The first signs of her future career were manifested since childhood, as she was working with some members of her family. She demonstrated early gifts for dance and for music, as well as for various performances. Her first recording was made at the age of 12, and four years later she was again on the limelights, after winning the local Tejano music award for best female performer and vocalist. She won, among others, for a special version of Tex-Mex, where both elements of country and rock were included. She diversified the style by adding to her portfolio various dance styles, but equally cumbias and different other Latin influences. Her voice and special presence on the stage attracted instantly a lot of fans from both the US and across the Latin America. Due to her success, she recorded some English versions of her songs that did not succeed to be launched as an album due to her tragic murder in 1994. Despite her short life, she is a source of pride for her community, being often considered a Latina Madonna, whose personality was a source of nearly religious devotion.
